During Chinese New Year, gifting red packets, or hongbao, is a cherished tradition symbolizing good fortune and prosperity. Many prefer using crisp, new notes as they are seen as a sign of respect and a fresh start for the recipient.

However, producing new currency comes at a significant environmental cost. The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) estimated that generating the required number of new notes for the festive season produces approximately 408 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent—comparable to the annual energy consumption of about 220 four-room HDB flats.
The preference for new notes has gradually shifted. According to The Straits Times, a 2024 survey by the Ministry of Digital Development and Information, nearly two-thirds of hongbao givers opted for fit notes instead of new ones. These fit-for-gifting notes, as described by the MAS, are clean and suitable for recirculation. Their quality matches the notes dispensed by ATMs, making them an environmentally friendly choice for the festive season.

This change demonstrates growing awareness of the environmental impact and a willingness to embrace sustainable alternatives without compromising the spirit of the tradition.
Another sustainable option gaining popularity is digital gifting. E-angpaos allow for the electronic transfer of money, and DBS' QR gift cards can be recycled after use, further reducing waste. These modern alternatives align with efforts to promote eco-friendly practices during traditional celebrations.
