The Quiet End of an Era: Filmgarde Cineplexes Bids Farewell

Singapore's homegrown independent cinema chain, Filmgarde Cineplexes, has officially shut down, marking its complete exit from the local film scene. The final outlet at Kallang Leisure Park has closed its doors, with its status now listed as "Permanently Closed" on Google.

The closure, announced via Facebook and Instagram on 25 March 2025, signifies the end of an 18-year journey that began in 2007. In its farewell message, Filmgarde expressed gratitude to its patrons, staff, and the local film community for their unwavering support. The cinema also reflected on its proudest moments, including hosting the critically acclaimed Oscar-winning film ROMA with director Alfonso Cuarón in attendance.

Filmgarde’s departure adds to the growing list of cinema closures in Singapore. Shaw Theatres recently shut its Seletar Mall outlet in December 2024, while Cathay Cineplexes ceased operations at West Mall in February 2025, AMK Hub in June 2024, Parkway Parade in August 2023, and The Cathay on Handy Road in June 2022.

Despite these closures, several cinemas continue to operate, including Golden Village, Shaw Theatres, and Cathay Cineplexes at select locations. Independent cinema The Projector remains a niche favorite for film enthusiasts.

With streaming services on the rise and consumer habits shifting, the local cinema industry faces increasing challenges. However, the hope remains that future generations will continue to appreciate the magic of the big screen.
