New HDB BTO Flats "White Flats" Without Walls and Beams

Home seekers in Singapore will soon have the option to choose a new type of Housing Board (HDB) flat designed without partitions or beams, creating an open-concept living and bedroom space. These "white flats" will be piloted in a Build-To-Order (BTO) project in the Kallang-Whampoa area, slated for launch in October.

A Blank Canvas for Homeowners

Announced by National Development Minister Desmond Lee on May 27, the HDB white flats offer homeowners a blank canvas, allowing them to design and personalize their living spaces according to their needs and preferences. This flexible layout is expected to appeal particularly to couples and young families who desire an open space for children to play freely, without the need for initial renovation to remove walls.

Pilot Project Details

The pilot project will feature 80 three-room units and 230 four-room flats, located near Lavender MRT station, bordered by North Bridge Road and Crawford Street. This prime location adds convenience and accessibility to the innovative design options.

Flexibility for Changing Needs

In his speech at the Pre-University Seminar held at the Ho Bee Auditorium in the National University of Singapore, Minister Lee highlighted the adaptability of the white flats. He noted that young families could benefit from the open space during their children’s early years. As their needs evolve, they have the flexibility to reconfigure the flat, adding partitions to create separate bedrooms or redesigning living areas.

This concept emerged from feedback received during the Forward Singapore exercise, where young Singaporeans expressed a desire for more flexible living spaces that could adapt to different life stages. “We took this idea back, and worked with our architects and engineers to see what we could do,” Minister Lee said.

Choosing the White Flat Option

When invited to book a flat, buyers can opt for the white flat layout. Those who prefer a more traditional layout will receive a standard unit with pre-installed walls. This option provides prospective homeowners with greater choice and the ability to tailor their living environment to their personal and family needs.

The introduction of white flats in the upcoming Kallang-Whampoa BTO project marks a significant step towards more flexible and customizable living spaces in Singapore. By offering an open-concept layout, HDB is responding to the evolving needs of homeowners, allowing for greater personalization and adaptability throughout different stages of life.
