The Seoul Metropolitan Government conducted a thorough analysis of various items purchased from Shein, including clothing, accessories, and footwear. The tests revealed that numerous products contained hazardous substances, including formaldehyde, lead and phthalates, which far exceeded the safety limits established by international standards.

Formaldehyde, commonly used in textiles to prevent wrinkles and mildew, was found in quantities that pose serious health risks, such as skin irritation and respiratory problems. Lead, a toxic metal that can cause severe neurological and developmental issues, was detected in excessive amounts in several jewelry items. Phthalates, often used to make plastics more flexible, were present in levels that can disrupt endocrine functions and harm reproductive health.

Seoul authorities have discovered toxic substances up to 428 times the legal limits in children's products sold by Shein. In a recent safety inspection of eight children's leather items, seven were found to contain hazardous chemicals. Among the four leather bags tested, one had 1.2 times the permissible level of formaldehyde, while the others had phthalate plasticizers up to 153 times over the limit. Of the two pairs of children's shoes inspected, one had 1.8 times the allowed formaldehyde, and the other had phthalate plasticizers 428 times above the permitted level. Additionally, a leather belt was found to contain lead at 1.78 times the acceptable limit.

The findings have prompted an immediate response from Seoul authorities, who have called for stricter regulations and more rigorous testing of imported fashion products. Consumers are urged to exercise caution and stay informed about the potential risks associated with fast fashion purchases.

Shein, which has gained immense popularity worldwide for its trendy and affordable clothing, is now under scrutiny. The company has faced previous criticisms for its environmental impact, labor practices, and quality control issues. This latest revelation adds to the growing list of concerns about the brand's operations and commitment to safety standards.

The incident underscores the importance of transparency and accountability in the fashion industry. As consumers become increasingly aware of the potential dangers posed by toxic chemicals in clothing and accessories, the demand for safer, more sustainable fashion is expected to rise. This case serves as a crucial reminder for brands to prioritize the health and well-being of their customers, adhere to stringent safety standards and be environmentally responsible.
