Starting Apr 15, HDB households in Singapore are in for an eco-friendly boost as they receive $300 worth of e-vouchers to purchase energy- and water-saving appliances. This initiative, a significant expansion of the existing Climate Friendly Households Programme introduced in Nov 2020, aims to promote sustainability and lower utility bills for residents.
Announced on Mar 4 by Senior Minister of State for Sustainability and the Environment, Amy Khor, the distribution of these e-vouchers signifies a strategic move towards enhancing energy and water efficiency in households. Previously, only one- to three-room HDB flats were eligible for $225 worth of vouchers, limited to specific appliance categories.
However, with this expansion, all 1.1 million HDB households, including new homeowners until 2027, will benefit from $300 worth of Climate Vouchers, with flexible denominations ranging from $2 to $50.
These Climate Vouchers are valid for three years until Dec 31, 2027, allowing ample time for households to make sustainable choices. Notably, there are no restrictions on the amount usable for any appliance, offering residents flexibility in their purchases. The initial tranche of vouchers will expire on Mar 20, paving the way for the distribution of the new set.
Dr. Khor emphasized that the selected 10 appliances under this programme significantly contribute to household electricity and water consumption. By encouraging the adoption of energy- and water-efficient options, the initiative aims to lower utility bills while reducing environmental impact. The selected 10 appliances include air-conditioners, washing machines, refrigerators, shower fittings, basin taps, sink/bib taps, water closets, LED lights, direct current fans and heat pump water heaters.

While energy-saving appliances may entail higher upfront costs, they translate to long-term savings and environmental benefits. For instance, switching from a one-tick to a five-tick air-conditioner can yield annual electricity bill savings of $450. Amidst rising gas and electricity prices and an upcoming water price hike, this expansion comes as a timely measure to alleviate household expenses while promoting sustainability.
Starting Apr 15 2024, HDB flat owners can claim their e-vouchers via RedeemSG using their Singpass accounts (just like the CDC vouchers). Subsequently, they can redeem the Climate Vouchers at any of the 14 participating retailers, including Courts, Best Denki, FairPrice, and Dairy Farm Retail Group (Giant and Cold Storage).

In essence, this initiative underscores Singapore's commitment to fostering a greener future by empowering residents to make environmentally conscious choices in their households.
