The tradition of gift-giving is a universal act that spans across various cultures and histories, each with its unique customs and significance. In Japan, this tradition took on a distinct form during the Edo period (1603–1868) with the introduction of fukusa, silk covers used to elegantly wrap gifts. These exquisite textile pieces were not merely decorative but were thoughtfully chosen to reflect the occasion and convey a specific message to the recipient.

Fukusa were used for a range of events, from seasonal celebrations to significant personal milestones. The covers were draped or folded over gifts, showcasing some of the finest examples of Japanese textile artistry. They featured intricate embroidery, weaving, painting, and dyeing techniques, making each piece a work of art in its own right.
The "Fukusa: Japanese Gift Covers from the Chris Hall Collection" exhibition at ACM presents a remarkable selection of fukusa and related Japanese textiles from the esteemed Chris Hall collection. The exhibition explores themes of craft, trade, and cultural exchange, highlighting the rich tradition of gift-giving in Japan. It also celebrates a significant donation of Japanese art from Chris Hall to the museum.
