Sudden Closure of Cathay Cineplexes at JEM, Marking Another Exit in Singapore’s Cinema Scene

Moviegoers in Singapore have one less place to catch the latest blockbusters as Cathay Cineplexes at JEM Shopping Mall has officially shut its doors.

This unexpected closure was first reported by major news outlets such as CNA and The Straits Times, with Cathay Cineplexes releasing an official statement about the JEM closure on social media at 1:00 PM. The closure appears to have taken immediate effect, leaving many patrons surprised.

Cathay Cineplexes JEM, which opened in 2013, had been a popular destination for West-side residents looking to enjoy a cinematic experience. Over the past 12 years, it has brought countless movie moments to audiences, from thrilling premieres to casual weekend screenings.

In a farewell message on Facebook, the cinema operator expressed gratitude to patrons for their support over the years, recalling the joy of sharing stories, laughter, and unforgettable memories on the big screen.

While the official statement did not specify the reason behind the closure, it has been reported that cinema operator mm2 Asia owes approximately S$4.3 million in unpaid rent to the landlord. This marks the sixth cinema closure for the company in the past three years, a reflection of the ongoing challenges faced by Singapore’s cinema industry.

For those affected by the sudden closure, Cathay Cineplexes has advised customers to reach out via email at corporate_services@cathaycineplexes.com.sg for further assistance.

Despite this closure, movie lovers can still visit its remaining Cathay Cineplexes locations at Clementi 321, Causeway Point, Century Square, and Downtown East. While the Jem chapter has come to an end, the love for cinema will (hopefully) continue at Cathay’s remaining venues across the island.
