Are Cinemas Like Cathay Cineplexes Facing the Same Fate as Traditional Bookstores?

The cinema industry has been facing significant challenges in recent years, with shifting consumer habits and financial difficulties threatening its survival.

The latest development in Singapore's cinema scene highlights these struggles, as Cathay Cineplex has reportedly received letters of demand for approximately $2.7 million in unpaid rent and other costs at its Century Square and Causeway Point cinemas (The Straits Times, 03 Feb 2025).

The rise of streaming services has fundamentally changed how audiences consume entertainment, with many opting for the convenience of watching movies at home rather than visiting cinemas. This shift has placed immense pressure on traditional movie theaters, leading to declining ticket sales and financial strain. Similarly, traditional bookstores faced a comparable challenge when e-books and online retailers reshaped the way people purchased and read books.

Beyond competition from digital platforms, rising operational costs and rental expenses add to the difficulties faced by cinema operators. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic further exacerbated these issues from 2020 to 2023, forcing temporary closures and reducing audience numbers even after restrictions were lifted. As a result, cinema chains have had to explore new ways to attract moviegoers, such as premium experiences, immersive screenings, and exclusive events.

Despite these challenges, cinemas still offer a unique social and immersive experience that cannot be fully replicated at home. While the industry must continue adapting to changing consumer behaviors, the future of traditional movie theaters will likely depend on their ability to innovate and provide compelling reasons for audiences to return to the big screen.

The question remains: can cinemas survive the transformation of the entertainment landscape, or will they follow the path of traditional bookstores, struggling to stay relevant in a digital-first world?
